According to the BBC a new play will be arriving in London soon that focuses on the life of Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, and though it will not appear in the West End, it does highlight the number of plays/musicals in the capital that have a real life story at their heart.
Though there are plenty of plays that deal with fictional stories – from “Driving Miss Daisy” to “Jerusalem” – there have also been those that focus on a famous events/people from history – like Aristotle Onassis, as played by Robert Lindsay in “Onassis” or drama at a real American company in “ENRON” - giving London theatre audiences a chance to witness real history unfold.
But it doesn’t end with plays. There are also musicals that can mirror the real world. Take “Jersey Boys”, for example, which focuses on the rise of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. A jukebox musical, it features plenty of hit songs from the band in question, but instead of coming up with a new story audiences are able to re-live the excitement and drama that chronicled their success. The same goes for another musical – “Million Dollar Quartet” - which details the real-life recordings between Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.
So make sure you head on a trip to the West End to witness some real life stories come to life. There are bound to be plenty more on the horizon.
