Synopsis

Thea Sharrock will direct Hollywood star Danny DeVito and veteran British actor Richard Griffiths at the Savoy Theatre soon as “The Sunshine Boys” replaces “Legally Blonde the Musical”. The well known director is well used to working with established names, having previously worked with the likes of Keira Knightley in “The Misanthrope” two years ago and as a result it is clear that the production is in safe hands as yet another big name sees the attraction of the West End. The show is set to have a brief appearance from April to July 2012.

The plot of “The Sunshine Boys” focuses on two former Vaudevillian performers who once a well known double act. Al Lewis (Griffiths) and Willy Clark (DeVito) have long since parted company, not only due to differences that emerged from working together for so long, but also because Clark still feels resentment towards Lewis from leaving the profession in the first place. But now there’s an opportunity to mend fences as CBS comes calling, asking them to reunite for a television special. Time will tell if they can put their differences behind them once and for all.

The show originally appeared on Broadway in the early 1970s and was adapted to the big screen in the middle of the same decade.

Thea Sharrock has worked on a wealth of well known shows over the years with a recent stint directing Ruby Wax in her show “Losing It” at the Menier Chocolate Factory and Terrence Rattigan’s “Cause Celebre” at the Old Vic Theatre. Her other credits include “After the Dance” at Lyttelton National Theatre, “The Misanthrope” at the Comedy Theatre (now the Harold Pinter Theatre), “As You Like It” at Shakespeare’s Globe and more. So she is well used to working with some big names so it is likely that the show will be in safe hands as it opens in April.

After all actors Danny DeVito and Richard Griffiths have appeared in their fair share of well known movies and television shows, the former in the likes “Batman Returns”, “Twins” and television series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and the latter in the likes of “Withnail and I” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: One Stranger Tides”.

“The Sunshine Boys” runs at the Savoy Theatre from Thursday 17th May 2012 (previews from Friday 27th April 2012) until Saturday 28th July 2012.
