Eve Best, best known to audiences for her roles on the screen such as “Nurse Jackie” and “The King’s Speech”, is set to return to the Old Vic Theatre this year in a new production of John Webster’s 17th century play “The Duchess of Malfi”. The play will also feature Jamie Lloyd as director and will appear in front of London theatre audiences from March to June 2012. It will be an opportunity to step back in time and enjoy a production enjoyed by many previous generations and focuses on a period in Italian history more than 500 years old.
Eve Best, as mentioned, has appeared onscreen in “Nurse Jackie” and “The King’s Speech” (portraying Wallis Simpson in the latter), though she also has numerous other credits to her name both from the stage and screen. In addition to shows like “The Inspector Lynley Mysteries” and “Waking the Dead” she has also starred in “A Moon for the Misbegotten” at the Old Vic Theatre, which earned her a Laurence Olivier Award nomination a year after she won the award for “Hedda Gabler” at the Almeida Theatre, and “’Tis Pity She’s a Whore” at the Young Vic Theatre.
Meanwhile, director Jamie Lloyd has been behind a host of London theatre shows and has earned numerous awards during his career as well, whilst also acting as the Associate Director of the Donmar Warehouse in Covent Garden. His credits include “The Pride” for the Royal Court Theatre, which earned a Laurence Olivier Award, and “Polar Bears” at the Donmar Warehouse, in addition to West End shows like “The Lover & The Collection” at the Comedy Theatre (now the Harold Pinter Theatre), “Elegies” at the Arts Theatre and “The Little Dog Laughed” at the Garrick Theatre.
In “The Duchess of Malfi” the focus is on the eponymous character on the Court of Malfi from 1504 to the end of that decade. She has recently been widowed at the beginning of the play and when she falls in love with Antonio she is forced to marry in secret to hide it from her brothers, concerned about sharing their inheritance. When they discover the truth, plus the several children they have had together, what unravels is a tale of revenge and deceit.
“The Duchess of Malfi” makes its appearance at the Old Vic Theatre from Saturday 17th March 2012 until Saturday 9th June 2012.
