In 2012 those headed to the National Theatre on South Bank will have another stand-out play to choose when it comes to picking up theatre tickets as Oliver Goldsmith’s classic 18th century play “She Stoops to Conquer” arrives in the capital with an all-star cast and a director in Jamie Lloyd. The play was penned in 1771 and was first seen by audiences in 1773, five years after another of the Irish playwright’s famous plays “The Good-Natur’d Man”, making it a timeless classic and one that focuses on mistaken identity, love and mayhem – the ingredients for a gripping production.
The plot focuses on the character of Hardwicke, as portrayed by “The League of Gentlemen” member Steve Pemberton, as he arrives to acquaint his daughter with his old friend’s son, with the hope of a marriage blossoming. But Hardwicke is seen as a man of worth and when he meets Marlowe, the potential husband, he mistakes him for an innkeeper and his daughter for a barmaid. The mistake has its benefits – Marlowe finds it much easier to talk to girls who are not from the same standings as people like Hardwicke – but there’s plenty of mayhem along the way.
Steve Pemberton arrives at the Olivier National Theatre on the back of various radio, television, film and theatre roles, with “The League of Gentlemen” spanning all fields. His other theatre credits include “The Drowsy Chaperone” at the Novello Theatre and “Art” at the Trafalgar Studios, whilst his television roles have also included the likes of “Psychoville”, “Doctor Who”, “Minder”, “The Last Detective” and “Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)”, among others. For the big screen he can be seen in the likes of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and “Match Point”.
Another performer headed to the stage in the production is Sophie Thompson, who is best known for her role in “EastEnders” in which she portrayed Stella Crawford until 2007. She has also appeared in other television shows like “Jonathan Creek”, “Doc Martin” and “Big Top”, in addition to films like “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”.
Following on from shows like “The Comedy of Errors” with Lenny Henry and “13”, “She Stoops to Conquer” runs at the Oliver National Theatre from Tuesday 24th January 2012 to Wednesday 28th March 2012.
