In 2012 audiences will no doubt be flocking to the Garrick Theatre. After all, as well as “Chicago”, which is set to return to the West End following its previous run at the Cambridge Theatre, the venue is also going to be the home of “Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain”. The production is an unmissable stage experience for all those above the age of six – especially those that were fans of the hit series of books – and in addition to being great entertainment it will also provide an educational outlook as well (albeit one that does not shy away from the gruesome details).
The series of books has had many different authors over the years, but perhaps the best known is Terry Deary, who also lends his talents to the stage production alongside co-writers Neal Foster and Ciaran McConville. Deary has also penned a great deal of other books, which has made him a highly sought-after children’s author whose work has been experienced all over the world. Prior to “Barmy Britain” his other books to be adapted to the stage include “Wild Wales”, “Vile Victorians” and “Terrible Tudors”, in addition to original plays like “The Frightful First World War”.
But with “Barmy Britain” the focus is firmly on the oddball characters from this nation’s past and as a result our trip back in time will include visits to Guy Fawkes, famous for attempting to blow up parliament, Henry VIII, perhaps one of the best known English monarchs, and even Romans and Georgian characters as well. It will make for a stand-out show and one that will include gory and gruesome details along the way, ensuring everyone will remember their visit to the Garrick Theatre.
The show is presented by the Birmingham Stage Company, who presented the other additions in the series and who were founded by the show’s director Neal Foster. The company has also been behind a wealth of other shows that have appeared in London and/or stages around the country like “Horrible Sciene” and “George’s Marvellous Medicine”.
“Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain” makes its appearance at the Garrick Theatre from Tuesday 14th February 2012 until Saturday 1st September 2012.
