“Top Hat”, following its tour of regional theatres across the United Kingdom, is set to arrive in the West End in 2012 as Tom Chambers and Summer Strallen lead the cast at the Aldwych Theatre. Alongside Martin Ball, Vivien Parry, Ricardo Afonso and Stephen Boswell they will recreate the story made famous by the 1935 film, with the stand-out songs and the beloved characters all returning to the spotlight.
So with a story that has taken hold of audiences regularly for much of the last century, plus some talented performers leading the way, “Top Hat” should have audiences flocking to pick up theatre tickets.
“Top Hat” was one of those movies that had everything going for it when it first arrived on screens back in the 1930s. It had a great case that included Fred Astaire in one of his most successful roles, as well as Ginger Rogers and Edward Everett Horton as his love interest and boss respectively, and it also featured great musical numbers from Irving Berlin to accompany a screwball comedy plot. So it is no wonder that it is still held in high regard more than 75 years later.
This time around Tom Chambers takes on the role made famous by Astaire - Jerry Travers – and both Summer Strallen and Martin Ball portray Dale Tremont and Horace Hardwick respectively. Travers is an American dancer who arrives in the UK to perform in a London theatre production produced by Hardwick and soon enough he meets Tremont, who quickly becomes the object of his desires. But she mistakes him for the married Hardwick and she is horrified by his advances, leading to a farcical case of mistaken identity and misunderstandings.
Tom Chambers is best known to audiences for his appearances in various television programmes, which include “Holby City” and “Waterloo Road”, whilst Summer Strallen will be recognisable to West End theatre fans for her numerous appearances in hit musicals. Her credits include “Love Never Dies” at the Adelphi Theatre and “The Sound of Music” at the London Palladium. Meanwhile, Martin Ball has appeared in the likes of “Mamma Mia!” at the Prince of Wales Theatre and “Les Misérables” at the Queen’s Theatre.
“Top Hat” is set to appear at the Aldwych Theatre from Wednesday 9th May 2012 (previews from Thursday 19th April 2012) to Saturday 26th January 2013.
