In 2012 London theatre audiences will get a chance to witness “A Round-Heeled Woman” on a West End stage as the show, which already wowed those at the Riverside Studios, makes the transition to the Aldwych theatre, the former home of “Dirty Dancing” and the upcoming home of “Top Hat”. The production is based on the novel by Jane Juska, with Jane Prowse bringing it to the stage with American actress Sharon Gless in the lead role. It chronicles the romantic and sexual adventures of the novel’s author as she attempts to find a man in California at the age of 67.
The show has also appeared on the other side of the Atlantic since it was first work shopped in San Francisco, with Prowse’s version of the text first appearing in Miami before its Riverside Studios debut. It tells the story of Juska, a 67 year old divorcee who has been out of the dating game for three decades and decides enough is enough, taking out an ad in the New York Review of Books. Sixty-three replies and an abundance of dates later and she put her thoughts to paper in a chronicle of her exploits.
Jane Prowse has been behind a wealth of stage and television productions both as a writer and as a director. “A Round-Heeled Woman” is her latest adaptation after bringing John Steinbeck’s “The Pearl” to the stage, whilst her other credits include “A Little Like Drowning” and her Laurence Olivier Award-nominated turn with “Up on the Roof”. For television she has penned the likes of “Ghost Train”, “Trial & Retribution” and “The Commander”, the latter of which she also directed. She has also been behind various novels over the years, in addition to the movie “Maya Fox”.
Sharon Gless, meanwhile, has previous starred in “Chapter 2” at the Gielgud Theatre and “Misery” at the Criterion Theatre. She stars in “A Round-Heeled Woman” alongside Jane Bertish, Beth Cordingly, Barry McCarthy, Neil McCaul and Michael Thomson, who also have various credits between them. Bertish, for example, has appeared in the likes of “Othello” at the Lyric Theatre and “Hurts Given and Received” at the Riverside Studios.
“A Round-Heeled Woman” appears at the Aldwych Theatre from Wednesday 30th November 2011 (previews from Thursday 24th November 2011) until Saturday 14th January 2012.
