Synopsis

This Christmas will be another occasion in which London theatre audiences can relish in the work presented by the Old Vic Theatre as Michael Frayn’s “Noises Off” returns to the stage following previous stints in the capital that go back to 1982. Celia Imrie, Janie Dee, Robert Glenister and Jamie Glover are among those that make up the cast whilst Lindsay Posner – herself a stage regular with plenty of West End shows under her belt – takes on duties as director. So in a year that has also seen the likes of “Richard III” and others head to the stage, “Noises Off” will undoubtedly match this by encouraging high sales of theatre tickets.

First arriving at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1982 with performers such as Paul Eddington in lead roles, “Noises Off” has gone on to find success on both sides of the Atlantic. Its first appearance in London would later transfer to the Savoy Theatre before a New York production opened in the same year. Then, in 2000, the National Theatre presented another edition of the show to great success, once again enjoying a transfer to the West End (this time to the Piccadilly Theatre).

The plot is a play within a play and, like “Pippin” at the Menier Chocolate Factory, allows us to see behind the scene of a show at the same time as delving into the plot of the play itself. On this occasion it is a play called “Nothing On” that a group of amateur performers are presenting and as they take it on tour it is clear that there is as much going on behind the scenes as there is on the stage. With disastrous rehearsals and dramatic personal relationships it is hard to tell where the real story is taking place.

Among the cast members if Jamie Glover, an actor who is best known to audiences around the UK for his portrayal of Andrew Treneman in “Waterloo Road”. He has also appeared in numerous stage roles and film productions and so as he heads to the Old Vic Theatre he has previously starred in shows like “The Glass Menagerie” and “The Cherry Orchard”, among others. As well as Glover and those already mentioned, the cast also includes Karl Johnson, Aisling Loftus, Amy Nuttall and Paul Ready.

“Noises Off” begins at the Old Vic Theatre on Tuesday 13th December 2011 (with previews from Saturday 3rd December 2011) and continues to Saturday 25th February 2012.
