“Pippin” is a well known musical from a renowned creative team and with a history of success on Broadway and in the West End. Now it returns to a London theatre, this time with Mitch Sebastian taking on directing duties, and in doing so it will see audiences picking up theatre tickets to the renowned Menier Chocolate Factory.
“Pippin” tells a unique story in an interesting way and this is perhaps the reason why it managed to win over audiences in the 1970s so easily. Its original Broadway run lasted from 1972 to 1977 and it also appeared in the West End at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1973. But then audiences would not expect anything less from Stephen Schwartz, the musician and lyricist of the piece who has been behind some well known musicals over the decades. Back in the 1970s it was “Pippin” and “Godspell” that turned heads and in 2011 audiences also know him for the hugely successful musical “Wicked”.
The unique story of “Pippin” forms around the title character, who is the heir to the throne of Charlemagne and is seeking out meaning in the world. He is regularly presented with lust, politics, sex and religion but what he really desires is beauty, glory, fame and magic. But instead of simply telling this story from the middle ages onstage, the plot is framed by an acting troupe as they attempt to put together the tale themselves. The result is a stand-out show that will find fans in a new generation when it opens in 2011.
Director Mitch Sebastian is another key draw for the production as he is a highly experienced choreographer and director whose best known work is the regularly reappearing “The Rat Pack Live from Vegas” (it and “Christmas with the Rat Pack” return soon to the Wyndham’s Theatre). He has also been behind other West End shows like “La Cava” at the Victoria Palace Theatre and “Playhouse Creatures” at the Old Vic Theatre, in addition to other shows around the capital and even work for television.
“Pippin” appears at the Menier Chocolate Factory for a run that begins on Tuesday 22nd November 2011 and continues to Saturday 25th February 2012.
