The Palace Theatre opens its doors to “Singin’ in the Rain” in 2012, welcoming a production that has already earned success at the Chichester Festival Theatre. But then, the story of Don Lockwood in silent movie era Hollywood has fans all over the world thanks to the 1952 movie from which this production takes its cues. It ensures that whenever a production like this opens in the West End there will be an abundance of theatregoers striving to pick up theatre tickets and witness the action first hand.
This time around Adam Cooper takes on the role of Lockwood, meaning he will be acting in the signature performance of “Singin’ in the Rain” as he is drenched with water (and no doubt those in the front row as well!) whilst his co-stars include Scarlett Strallen, Daniel Crossley and Katherine Kingsley. Together they feature in a story that takes audiences back to the transition period in Hollywood when silent movies were slowly replaced by the so-called ‘talkies’. We follow a silent movie actor, Don Lockwood, who faces this change having already found huge success and has been romantically linked to his co-star.
Scarlett Strallen has appeared in various shows over the years and these have taken her to the West End and also to Broadway, where she appeared in the “Mary Poppins” at the New Amsterdam Theatre before bringing that production to the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre in 2007. Her other credits include “The Music Man” at the Chichester Festival Theatre, “The Merry Wives of Windsor” for the Royal Shakespeare Company. As a result she is a well known name in musical theatre and is a great choice to take on Debbie Reynold’s role of Kathy Seldon in the stage production.
“Singin’ in the Rain” will be right at home in the West End, a location that is already the home to some of the best known musicals in the world, whether they are movie adaptations like “Ghost the Musical” or long-running masterpieces like “The Phantom of the Opera”.
