The Menier Chocolate Factory, one of London's most exciting small theatre venues, is pleased to announce the world premiere production of 'Terrible Advice', the debut play from Canadian actor, director, producer – and now playwright – Saul Rubinek. The play will run from Thursday 22nd September to Saturday 12th November 2011, and is directed by Frank Oz, with a cast including Sharon Horgan, Andy Nyman, and Caroline Quentin.
'Terrible Advice' tells the story of the intertwining relationships of four friends – Stanley, Jake, Hedda and Delila. Stanley, nicknamed 'Stinky' by his friends, is in love with Delila, and plans to marry her; his best friend Jake is, in turn, in love with Hedda. However, as the relatonships between the characters deepen and the plot thickens, Jake takes it upon himself to reveal some confidential knowledge to Stanley, followed up by some words of advice which may or may not have Stanley's best interests at heart, and may or may not have the desired consequences.
Saul Rubinek has had a wealth of experience in film and TV both as an actor and a director, but this production marks his first outing as a playwright. Director Frank Oz has had an illustrious and varied career, first earning recognition for his long-term collaboration with Jim Henson, most notably on 'The Muppet Show' and 'Sesame Street'. He went on to voice Yoda in the 'Star Wars' films, then found his way into directing with films such as 'Little Shop of Horrors' (1986) and 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' (1988). The Menier Chocolate Factory was left derelict in the 1980s, but since it re-opened in 2005, artistic director David Babini has led this 180-seat fringe theatre from strength to strength.
Sharon Horgan is known for both writing and starring in the BBC sitcom 'Pulling', as well as appearances in other acclaimed BBC comedies such as 'Extras' and 'Monkey Dust'. Andy Nyman is best known for his ten-year collaboration with Derren Brown, writing some of the most memorable entertainment of the 2000s. He is also an accomplished actor, having trained at the Guildhall school of music and drama, and winning the Best Actor award at the Cherbourg Film Festival in 2006 for his part in 'Shut Up and Shoot Me'. Caroline Quentin won the Best Comedy Actress award at the British Comedy Awards in 1995 for her role as Dorothy in 'Men Behaving Badly', and has extensive theatre experience, including starring in 'The London Cuckolds' and 'Roots' for the National Theatre.
