Coming to Trafalgar Studios 2 is Christopher Hampton’s landmark drama about young sexuality in the big city. This poignant play is a mature observation of the problematic nature of relationships in the modern world, and since it’s initial release when it burst onto the theatre scene almost half a century ago it has continued to be a relevant and exciting piece of theatre. The current production of this fine work is sure to be a memorable experience, with an array of fine talents assembled to take it to the stage. For anyone interested in theatre, this is a hugely exciting opportunity that you will not want to miss out on: so book your tickets now!
The play was Christopher Hampton’s first major work, and it is the piece that rocketed him to fame as a bright and bold new playwright. Since then he has gone on to win an Academy Award a film version of one of his works ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, and create the famous musical adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s ‘Rebecca’.
For many, though, ‘When Did You Last See My Mother?’ is still his finest achievement. In it we meet a young man, Ian, who is lonely and depressed in the middle of the swinging sixties. Despite living in the capital city during one of the most exciting decades of the past century, nothing seems to be going right for him. To exacerbate this, he’s flat sharing with the maddeningly successful Jimmy, who seems to cruise through life without any problems and get all the girls he wants. Ian makes the decision that enough is enough, and begins to pack his bags to leave London. But just as she does so he gets an unwanted visit from the last person he would expect: his mother. This is no ordinary family call, however, and her vibrant personality explodes his situation, revealing to the two young men things about themselves that they didn’t know before.
The production is directed by Blanche MacIntyre, an able hand who has become well known in London for her ability to bring out the nuances of complicated emotional situations and talent for creating a real sense of immediacy. Here her skills will be perfectly utilised by the play’s hard hitting emotional backdrop.
