In the West End there is an abundance of opportunity to witness stage productions that celebrate the music of some famous bands – whether it is the work of Queen in “We Will Rock You” or ABBA in “Mamma Mia!” – and the Lyric Theatre also offers a celebration of Michael Jackson with “Thriller Live”. Now the creator of the latter is bringing a new celebration of well known musicians to the West End with the opening of “Respect La Diva” for a brief run in September 2011. It will be a chance to witness some talented musicians recreating the classic songs of some well known performers.
The iconic performers that are to be celebrated include Aretha Franklin, Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Etta James, Mariah Carey and Shirley Bassey, among others, and to do this the producers have called upon the help of performers like Sheila Ferguson, Denise Pearson Zoe Birkett and Katy Setterfield.
Ferguson is best known to audiences for her work with the band The Three Degrees in the 1970s and has since appeared on shows like “Never Mind the Buzzcocks” and “I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!” Meanwhile, Pearson has appeared in “Thriller Live” and was once a member of Five Star back in the 80s and early 90s.
And the presenter of the show is Andy Abraham, who audiences will remember from his stint in the ongoing talent series “The X Factor” in 2005. Abraham went head to head with Shayne Ward in the competition and though we all know the outcome of that year’s competition he has gone on to carve his own path to stardom. This has seen various albums to his name released in the intervening years, from “The Impossible Dream” in 2006 to “Even If” in 2008.
So audiences should head to the Garrick Theatre this September if they want to see a show with plenty to offer. The production replaces the high profile “Pygmalion” at the venue, which has featured Kara Tointon and Rupert Everett among its cast members, and will undoubtedly precede something equally as worthy of attention.
