Synopsis

The Vaudeville Theatre announces a production of a play by one of the great masters of modern theatre.  Arthur Miller’s heartbreaking work ‘Broken Glass’ is scheduled to run at the Vaudeville Theatre between 14th of September and the 10th of December.  Uncompromising in it’s emotional impact, the piece has all the hallmarks of Miller’s haunting and darkly truthful style.  Though not his most famous and widely performed, it is a gem of the 20th century theatrical canon; this is a fantastic opportunity to see it played by some exceptional talents.  This is a must have ticket for theatre lovers everywhere: book yours now.

The play is set in the middle of World War II, during some of the most horrific events that took place in Germany.  It is not set, however, in the midst of these happenings, but in America.  Miller’s use of this distance allows him to create an intriguing parallel between the catastrophic world events and the deeply personal problems of the individuals who lived through them.  The piece revolves around a Jewish couple who live in New York, Phillip and Sylvia Gellburg.  Tragedy strikes when Sylvia loses the use of her legs after reading a newspaper report on the horrific story of Kristallnacht, the notorious ‘Night of Broken Glass’, where thirty thousand Jews were barbarically taken to concentration camps after a night of vandalism and murder.  Phillip is distraught, and engages the help of one Dr Harry Hyman.  Though he is not a psychiatrist, Hyman believes that it is a psychological problem rather than a physical one, and tries to help her accordingly.  In doing so the two become dangerously close, as they penetrate each other psychology and learn secrets about one another and themselves.

This is one of Miller’s final works, premiering as recently as 1994, and it shows a maturity and depth of vision that is only found in the later days of great artists.  The play will be brought to life by the talents of Sir Anthony Sher, in the role of Phillip, and Tara Fitzgerald, who plays the part of Sylvia.  Sher is a highly decorated and well respected British actor, having won a number of Laurence Olivier awards and an Evening Standard Award.  Tara Fitzgerald is a well known face, and has appeared in such films as ‘Brassed Off’ and ‘Five Children and It’, as well as television shows such as ‘Waking the Dead’.
