ZooNation Dance Company are back again with another genuinely original piece of dance theatre. They are bringing their new piece ‘Some Like It Hip Hop’ to the stage of Sadler’s Wells for a run of shows which, if their previous performances are anything to go by, is sure to go down in theatre history. ZooNation are definitely one of the most exciting dance companies working in Britain today, and their new piece has been highly anticipated and looked forward too by those in the know. This is your chance to catch something really special, and for fans of dance, hip hop and theatre alike, there is something everyone can enjoy from this remarkable company’s new show
ZooNation began around 2002 under the leadership of Kate Prince. Utilising the styles and tropes of street dancing, the company created a genre smashing work with ‘Into The Hoods’, where hip hop dance moves were used to weave a narrative and create characters, as opposed to it’s traditional use as a purely visual phenomenon. By bringing out this potential within street dance, the show was hailed as a huge success that changed the way people viewed the art form. The show was based upon Stephen Sondheim’s famous musical ‘Into the Woods’, but with a modern urban twist.
The company are hoping to repeat the success of this earlier show with their new offering ‘Some Like It Hip Hop’, which features many similar conceits to ‘Into the Hoods’. This piece, however, draws it’s material from Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’ and the famous film ‘Some Like It Hot’ which starred Marilyn Monroe. ‘Some Like It Hip Hop’ entwines these plots and brings out the themes of cross dressing which they both share. With a bag of tricks that involves physical theatre, street dance and pure comedy, this is a show that will make you laugh and challenge your expectations.
The show’s cast features an array of famous dancers who are masters of their craft. Tommy Franzen and Lizzie Gough are appearing, who you may remember from the TV programme ‘So You Think You Can Dance’, or the popular show ‘Blaze’. Alongside them Teneisha Bonner is appearing, who was one of the stars of ‘Into the Hoods’, and has recently found more major fame with her role in ‘StreetDance 3D’.
‘Some Like It Hip Hop’ is going to be quite a show indeed: get yourself tickets now and ensure yourself a place at this landmark event.
