Written by Aldred Uhry, the piece’s examination of the issues of race and prejudice are as relevant today as when the play made it’s debut in 1987. Brought to life by some of the greatest names in British theatre showbusiness, this is not an opportunity you will want to miss, out on, especially with the opportunity to book cheap tickets. Get your seats now and make sure you don’t pass up the chance to see this classic piece of drama.
The story revolves around the life of Daisy Werthern as she ages into her twilight years, from the end of the nineteen forties to the beginning of the seventies. This was a time of dramatic change in American society, which is examined through the life of this elderly woman. It is not only the story of Miss Daisy, but also, as the title implies, that of her chauffeur, one Hoke Colburn. Daisy’s identity as an aging Jewish woman, and Hoke’s as an African American, are threatened by the racism and intolerance of mid 20th century America; the play shows how after reluctant beginnings the two find they have a lot in common and become firm friends.
The play won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the 1988 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off Broadway Play. It now seen as a landmark piece of theatre full of warmth and originality.
Taking the title role of Daisy Werthern is the wonderful talent of Vanessa Redgrave, who by now is West End royalty indeed. Coming from a distinguished family of actors, Vanessa Redgrave is a highly decorated actress who over a long career has played a wide variety of characters, from Guinevere to Cosima Wagner to Clarissa Dalloway, in a range of famous films and plays which you are sure to have seen. She has won decorations from pretty much every prestigious awards body, including the Oscars, Tonys and Golden Globes.
The play also features James Earle Jones, a man assured his place in screen immortality thanks to his work voicing the character of Darth Vader in the Star Wars movies.
