Back in 1955 Ealing Studios released the movie “The Ladykillers” starring Alec Guinness, Katie Johnson, Peter Sellers and a host of other actors and it would go on to be highly regarded as one of the best British comedies of all time. More than half a century later it is still in the public mind and audiences continue to relish in the work – whilst 2004 also saw the release of a remake directed by the Coen Brothers – and as a result its status as a classic is well deserved.
And now the story is set to be retold onstage at the Gielgud Theatre, with comedy writer Graham Linehan penning the script and actors like Peter Capaldi, James Fleet and Ben Miller among the cast members. It follows in the footsteps of other famous movies like “Legally Blonde” finding a new audience on the stage.
Actor Peter Capaldi will be a familiar face to those picking up theatre tickets to witness the comic circumstances unfold. The Scottish actor is best known to modern audiences for his work in the hit television comedy “The Thick of It”, as well as the movie “In the Loop”, and has enjoyed a long and successful career in the spotlight with shows like “Torchwood” and movies like “Dangerous Liaisons”.
James Fleet, meanwhile, is a well known actor as well, having made a name for himself (at least with television audiences) in the hit sitcom “The Vicar of Dibley” as Hugo. His career has also seen him work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and in various shows in the West End.
Finally, Ben Miller, is best known for his comic partnership with Alexander Armstrong, with whom he entertains audiences with “The Armstrong and Miller Show”. He has also appeared in the likes of “The Parole Officer”, “Johnny English”, “The Prince and Me” and the upcoming “Johnny English Reborn”.
In “The Ladykillers” the focus is on a band of thieves that use the home of a sweet old lady as the epicentre of their latest crime. When she catches them and insists they return their stolen money, they must think of a way of disposing her so that they can keep the cash for themselves.
“The Ladykillers” is first set to appear at the Liverpool Playhouse in November 2011, with the appearance at the Gielgud Theatre running shortly afterwards.
