When audiences head to the West End to witness work written by, or related to, Shakespeare they usually do so thinking that they will catch the likes of “Much Ado About Nothing” (currently at the Wyndham’s Theatre) or “Richard III” (set to appear at the Old Vic Theatre). But audiences arriving at Trafalgar Studios 1 from mid-June will get to witness a production that celebrates not only his work but Shakespeare himself, with Simon Callow taking to the stage in a one-man show that looks at the man behind the pen.
The production is “Being Shakespeare” by Jonathan Bate and it is to be directed by the transatlantic director Tom Cairns.
“Being Shakespeare” will see Simon Callow take on a great deal of roles from the canon of Shakespeare, with Bate’s script guided by his own work as the writer of books like “The Genius of Shakespeare”. But it won’t just be the characters that take centre stage – the Bard himself will also be a prime focus – and this means that audiences will get an opportunity to celebrate the man himself. And seeing as the capital is regularly the home to such productions this is the best place for such a celebration to take place.
Simon Callow is a well known and respected actor whose work spans the stage and screen. Many of these are related to the work of Shakespeare – from the movie “Shakespeare in Love” to shows such as “Twelfth Night” at the National Theatre in 2011 – although he has also appeared in a wide range of other productions as well. From “Equus” at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2008 to “Waiting for Godot” at the Haymarket Theatre in 2009, he is highly experienced in some well known pieces of work and this leaves “Being Shakespeare” in good hands – particularly as he already brought the show to London once before, albeit outside of the West End at the Richmond Theatre.
Director Tom Cairns is also highly experienced, having been behind shows such as “The Odyssey” at the National Theatre, “All About My Mother” at the Old Vic and “Miss Julie” at the Greenwich Theatre over the years, in addition to work on Broadway as well.
London theatre audiences can catch “Being Shakespeare” at Trafalgar Studios 1 from Wednesday 15th June 2011 to Saturday 23rd July 2011.
