Trafalgar Studios are excited to announce the return of 'Betwixt!' to their Studio Two from the 26th of July to the 20th of August 2011. This hilarious, raucous and whimsical musical production comes from talented young writer and director Ian McFarlane, following its original 2008 run at the King's Head Theatre. This production brings a host of new songs to the show, plus an exciting cast including Ellen Greene, the original Audrey from 'Little Shop of Horrors', and former Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan, as well as a number of new emerging talents – definitely one to catch for musical fans.
The show is ostensibly set in New York in the present day, as struggling author Bailey finds a new flatmate in Cooper Fitzgerald, a flamboyant actor, who has recently found himself in possession of a mysterious key with no lock. The action quickly takes a turn away from its sober New York setting to a world of extravagant whimsy, magic and enchanted creatures, as the pair find that the key opens an equally mysterious door which has materialised in Bailey's flat. As they enter this dream world, populated by fairytale creatures ranging from frisky nymphs and gnarled hunchbacks to disembodied German heads and cross-dressing mutes, the two men are thrust into an epic – if preposterous – quest to rescue a princess from her captor, a wicked enchantress, by which they will fulfil a prophecy of this fairy-land. All of this action is packed into one boisterous and extravagant production, and is accompanied with a laugh-a-minute script and a whole host of wonderful musical numbers.
Ian McFarlane graduated from the Guildford School of Acting in 2007, having studied musical theatre, and staged 'Betwixt!', his first musical creation, in 2008, aged just 22. McFarlane is set to become a major force in British musical theatre, having written both the libretto and the music for 'Betwixt!', and directed the production both in its premiere run, and in this updated version. The play will be produced by up-and-coming West End producer Christopher D. Clegg. Ellen Greene takes on three roles, as the Princess, the Nymph Queen, and the Enchantress, with emerging talents Benedict Salter as Bailey, and Steven Webb as Cooper. Since opening in 2005, Trafalgar Studios has become one of London's most exciting new venues, with their 100-seat Studio Two providing a wonderfully intimate setting for this production.
