The Royal Shakespeare Company is well known for putting on performances of the work of the Bard, but last year (2010) one of its most high profile and much-talked-about shows was a musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel “Matilda”. The show had an abundance of talented names bringing it to the stage but few could have predicted the reaction from the critics, audiences and beyond - it even attracted the attention of Broadway producers at one point – but popular it was and now it is set to make its way to the West End.
With many of the original cast members still in their respective roles the show is set to run at the Cambridge Theatre from October 2010. Based on the critical reception so far it will be a worthy replacement of the show’s previous hit “Chicago” and will be right at home amongst other productions like “Billy Elliot the Musical”.
One of the talking points of the show is the creative talents working behind the scenes and these included the acclaimed director Matthew Warchus, plus musician and comedian Tim Minchin, who provides the music. There’s also a book by Dennis Kelly and cast that includes Paul Kaye, Bertie Carvel, Lauren Ward and Josie Walker.
And together they have adapted the famous 1988 novel from Roald Dahl, which focuses on a girl with extraordinary powers of intellect that are eventually complimented by supernatural psychokinetic powers. Blessed with brain power at an early age she is able to sniff out a person doing bad things in a heartbeat and she also managed to read the entire children’s section of the local library. Then, whilst at school, she is blessed with the miracle of her supernatural powers, which she is able to use to show those that deserve it a lesson or two about behaving right.
Those with theatre tickets will also witness a cast that includes Marc Antolin, Melanie La Barrie, Verity Bentham, Michael Kent, Matthew Malthouse, Alastair Parker, Nick Searle, Emily Shaw.
“Matilda the Musical” begins its run at the Cambridge Theatre from Tuesday 22nd November 2011 (with previews from Tuesday 18th October 2011) and has an initial booking period taking it to Sunday 12th February 2012.
