The Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End will be the home of the capital’s latest musical “Lend Me a Tenor: The Musical” when it opens its doors in June. It arrives in town on the back of a successful run at the Theatre Royal Plymouth and makes the journey with many of its key players in tow – such as director Ian Talbot and lead actor Matthew Kelly. It also has a successful play as its source material – one that earned many award nominations when it emerged in the 1980s – and as a result it is likely to attract many theatregoers eager to pick up theatre tickets and witness the latest addition to the musical theatre scene.
Matthew Kelly returns to the role of Henry Saunders from his stint in Plymouth in 2010 and this marks the second time he has been seen in the capital in 2011 following the recent run of “Sign of the Times” at the Duchess Theatre. Kelly is best known to audiences across the United Kingdom as the host of “Stars in their Eyes” for ITV, but in the last decade his Laurence Olivier Award win for “Of Mice and Men” at the Savoy Theatre and his appearance in “Waiting for Godot” have ensured that he has a loyal following in the West End.
With “Lend Me a Tenor: The Musical” he steps into a world that was originally created for the play “Lend Me a Tenor” in the 1980s from writer Ken Ludwig. The play would earn an abundance of Tony Award nominations on the other side of the Atlantic, in addition to a nomination at the Laurence Olivier Awards as well, and has now been adapted into a stand-out musical under the direction of Ian Talbot. The plot focuses on tenor Tito Merelli as he prepares to perform in Otello for a fundraiser, but an autograph-seeking fan, a case of mistaken identity and a case of mistaken infidelity leads to chaos behind the scenes.
Talbot is best known to London theatre audiences for his former position as Artistic Director of the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park, where he directed such shows as “The Fantasticks” and “Kiss Me Kate”. However, he has credits from across the country, in addition to other London shows such as “High Society” at the Shaftesbury Theatre.
“Lend Me a Tenor: The Musical” appears in the West End’s Gielgud Theatre as new shows such as “Ghost the Musical” also arrive in town. The former runs from Wednesday 15th June 2011 (previews from Thursday 2nd June 2011) to Saturday 19th November 2011.
