When it comes to jukebox musicals the West End has a lot to offer, from the ongoing Queen-celebration that is “We Will Rock You” to the work of Franki Valli and the Four Seasons offered up by the success story “Jersey Boys”, so there is something for everyone. But this is not where the story ends and in 2011 the capital is set to welcome even more stand-out hits, with the world’s first rock supergroup the focus of “Million Dollar Quartet” and the best of 1980s glam rock the launching point of “Rock of Ages”. The latter opens at Shaftesbury Theatre in August 2011 and based on its success on the other side of the Atlantic, audiences can expect a stand-out show.
“Rock of Ages”, like “Million Dollar Quartet”, is a jukebox musical that has its origins in the United States and has built up a great reputation on Broadway. It has also been seen on stages in the likes of Canada and Australia, with a host of Tony Award-nominations to its name as well. So it must be doing something right and as it heads to the London theatre scene in August it is undoubtedly regarded with great anticipation.
So expect the work of some of the world’s best known glam rock artists of the 1980s to make their way spectacularly to the stage of the Shaftesbury Theatre, from the work of Bon Jovi to Whitesnake. So this means songs such as “I Wanna Rock”, “Wanted Dead or Alive”, “The Final Countdown”, “I Wanna Know What Love Is” and “We Built this City”, among others, will be honoured in the modern day by the talented team onstage. With a book by Chris D’Arienzo as well, all the pieces are in place for an unforgettable evening.
Then there’s the story, which features a small-town girl named Sherrie and an LA rocker named Drew bonding and embarking on an exciting romance thanks to their mutual love for glam rock.
So make sure you head down to the Shaftesbury Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue from Wednesday 31st August 2011, when “Rock of Ages” will be dishing out the classics to those lucky enough to have gotten hold of theatre tickets when they had the chance!
