Synopsis

It originally entertained audiences at the Richmond Theatre in 2009 and now “Sign of the Times” makes the return to the capital in 2011, this time with a run at the West End’s Duchess Theatre, with Matthew Kelly and Gerard Kearns in lead roles. It will be another opportunity to witness a story from the acclaimed writer Tim Firth, whose plays have included some stand-out West End shows over the years, including the hit “Calendar Girls”, for which he was the writer of both the movie and stage version. So for London theatre audiences, “Sign of the Times” should be a worthwhile endeavour.

The plot follows the character of Frank, a man whose previous ambitions had been as a literary writer, who now utilises words in an altogether different way by putting up signs on the sides of buildings. It is a job that he has occupied for twenty five years and after so much time he has covered every brand you could think of – but he yearns for more. However, inspiration for Frank eventually comes from an unexpected place as he is joined on his job by a ham-handed teenager on work experience.

Actor Matthew Kelly appears in the production following his part in the recent West End hit “Waiting for Godot” at the Haymarket Theatre, which also starred Sir Ian McKellen. Prior to that he won a Laurence Olivier Award for “Of Mice and Men” at the Savoy Theatre in 2003, whilst his most famous work remains that of presenter for the ITV show “Stars in Their Eyes”. His further credits include “Troilus and Cressida” at Shakespeare’s Globe and television shows such as “Cold Blood”.

Meanwhile, his co-star Gerard Kearns has also accumulated a wealth of credits over the years and is a well known actor thanks to his part in the Channel 4 series “Shameless”. He has also appeared in a wealth of other roles onscreen, from the movie “Looking for Eric” to series such as “Foyle’s War”, “Doctors” and “The Commander”.

Peter Wilson will return to direct “Sign of the Times” following his stint at the Richmond Theatre. The show runs at the Duchess from Friday 11th March 2011 (with previews from Monday 7th March 2011) and continues to Saturday 28th May 2011.
