The life, times and music of Woody Guthrie is the stuff of legends, with the late American songwriter remembered as the man that embodied the folk movement and laid the foundations for some of the most celebrated artists in the world to emerge from the woodworks. Even today in 2011, nearly 45 years since he died in 1967, his music is still celebrated for its influence and for its depiction of historical eras like the Great Depression.
And one way in which this happens is with the popular musical production “Woody Sez”, which has been appearing on stages in the United Kingdom since 2007 when it premiered at that year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The show features David Lutken in the title role and alongside a cast that includes Darcie Deavill, Helen Russell and Andy Terstein – plus director Nick Corley – he brings the work of Guthrie to London theatre audiences in 2011.
So those holding theatre tickets will get to witness a show that brings the life and the work of Woody Guthrie to the stage. Whether audiences are fans of the artists he inspired, from Bruce Springsteen to Tom Paxton, or if they are fans of Guthrie’s songs like “This Land is Your Land” and “Roll on Columbia”, they will find plenty to be happy about with “Woody Sez” at the Arts Theatre.
David Lutken arrives in the West End following a career that previously brought him to the attention of Broadway audiences on the other side of the Atlantic, where he has appeared in shows such as “The Civil War”. But in the latter half of the last decade he teamed up with Nick Corley to get the book and the music together for “Woody Sez”, which would find pride of place on the stage at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. And like many shows that cut their teeth at the famous Scottish arts festival, it would eventually find its way to the Theatreland.
And it is in this setting that appears amongst a wealth of other well known jukebox musicals, whether its “Jersey Boys” and “Thriller Live”, chronicling the careers of The Four Seasons and Michael Jackson respectively, or “Mamma Mia!” which uses the music of ABBA to tell a brand new story.
“Woody Sez” makes its appearance at the Arts Theatre from Thursday 13th January 2011 until Saturday 2nd April 2011.
