Sir Terence Rattigan was born in 1911 and across the 20th century built up a reputation as one of the best English dramatists of the century. Today that title is firmly intact and in the year that he would have celebrated his 100th birthday a range of his shows appear in the capital once again, from his 1977 play “Cause Célèbre” at the Old Vic to his 1942 play “Flare Path” at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. It will be a wonderful celebration of the famous playwright that brought us shows such as “The Browning Version”, “Separate Tables”, “French Without Tears”, “The Winslow Boy”, “After the Dance” and many other stand-out plays.
“Flare Path” will see Sienna Miller in a lead role under the direction of the renowned Sir Trevor Nunn. She stars in a story of two lovers whose reunion during the Second World War takes an unexpected turn. Teddy is a bomber who has just returned to Lincolnshire following a recent raid and Patricia is his lover, keen to be reunited with him at the Falcon Hotel near the airfield. But pretty soon a famous heartthrob appears on the scene – a film star that grabs Patricia’s attention – and she is going to have to make a difficult decision when she is left alone following Teddy’s most recent bombing raid.
Sienna Miller is best known for her film roles, though she has also made her way to the stage previously in a production of “As You Like It” at the Wyndham’s Theatre in 2005 and “After Miss Julie” on Broadway. Onscreen her famous credits include the recent “G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra”, plus “Alfie”, “Factory Girl”, “Layer Cake”, “Casanova” and “The Edge of Love”, among others. So she is a familiar face for London theatre audiences arriving at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in 2011.
Meanwhile her director Sir Trevor Nunn has made a name for himself thanks to a range of stand-out productions he has directed around the capital, with well known works for the Royal Shakespeare Company such as “Macbeth” with Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen. His recent credits include “Birdsong” at the Comedy Theatre, “A Little Night Music” at the Menier Chocolate Factory and “The Seagull” at the New London Theatre.
“Flare Path” appears at the Theatre Royal Haymarket with a run that takes it from Thursday 10th March 2011 (with previews from Friday 4th March 2011) to Saturday 4th June 2011.
