A renowned creative team works alongside a talented group of singers, dancers and other performers with “Shoes” at the Peacock Theatre. It is likely to be a dance spectacular popular enough to maintain the venue’s dominance in contemporary dance in the West End, following on from the show’s previous success at the Peacock’s off-West End counterpart Sadler’s Wells. The renowned creative team is made up of choreographer Stephen Mears and “Jerry Springer the Opera” writer Richard Thomas– as well as a cast that includes Chloe Campbell and Tim Howar – so all of this should make for a unique spectacle in the West End with “Shoes” going on to become one of the dance events of the year.
Stephen Mears already has a Laurence Olivier Award and a Tony Award under his belt thanks to his previous work that has been staged on both sides of the Atlantic – namely the musical theatre production of “Mary Poppins”. He has earned great praise over the years thanks to such endeavours and amongst the best known in London is the production of “Hello Dolly” at the Open Air Theatre.
But London theatre audiences also get Richard Thomas, who will also be presenting “Anna Nicole the Opera” at the Royal Opera House at around the same time. With “Shoes” a celebration of all things footwear and “Anna Nicole” an opera about the life of the late Anna Nicole Smith no-one can accuse him of lacking a unique spark with his work. Then there is his most famous piece that he put together alongside Stewart Lee - “Jerry Springer the Opera” – which goes to show that he has been behind some well known pieces
But “Shoes” will offer something a little different altogether. Not only will the celebration of footwear contain many references to shoes, it will also feature a host of different forms of song, dance and live music. Those on London theatre breaks will witness everything from Slovakian folk music and memorable hip-hop numbers to a major set piece that involves crash test dummies.
With dancers like Chloe Campbell, James O’Connel, Lorraine Stewart and more, plus singers like Tim Howar, Gemma Duffy, Damian Humbley and Jennifer Peers, “Shoes” is likely to be a unmissable production.
It runs at the Peacock Theatre from Tuesday 8th February 2011 and continues to Sunday 13th March 2011.
