The work of Clifford Odets continues to find an audience whenever it is staged around the world and 2011 finds his play “Rocket to the Moon” maintaining a successful run at the Lyttelton National Theatre. The show has already been bringing in the crowds and has extended to June, giving more potential audiences the chance to pick up theatre tickets and witness the action first hand. The show features a cast made up of actors like Jessica Raine, Joseph Millson, Nicholas Woodeson and Keeley Hawes in a story that explores the very human concept of escape.
In “Rocket to the Moon” we meet the character of Ben Stark, a dentist whose humdrum, married life is providing him with a great deal of frustration, and as the story progresses his life begins to take an unexpected turn with the arrival of Cleo Singer. He sees Singer – a younger woman - as a means of great opportunity and escape and it forms one way in which this theme is explored. Elsewhere in the workplace there are other frustrated people and one woman in particular wishes to break free once and for all and has her sights set on nothing less than the real deal.
Clifford Odets was a well known American playwright whose work spanned many decades and earned an abundance of admirers in the United States and subsequently on this side of the Atlantic as well. His career began with work in the 1930s with the likes of “Waiting for Lefty”, “Till the Day I Die”, “Paradise Lost” and “Golden Box”, among others, with “Rocket to the Moon” appearing towards the end of the decade in 1938. Beyond then his work has also included “Clash By Night”, “The Big Knife” and “The Country Girl” – the latter of which recently finished a run at the West End’s Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.
Jessica Raine, who portrays Cleo Singer in the production, has various credits to her name with previous National Theatre work that includes “Earthquakes in London” and “Gethsemane”. Beyond the National her other credits include the movies “Robin Hood” and the upcoming “The Woman in Black”.
“Rocket to the Moon” opened at the Lyttelton National Theatre on Wednesday 30th March 2011 (previews from Wednesday 23rd March 2011) and is now set to continue to Tuesday 21st June 2011.
