Synopsis

This Christmas season audiences in the capital are treated to a show that will make everyone’s celebrations seem all the more appealing by comparison as they witness the farcical undoing of the holiday spirit in Alan Ayckbourn’s “Season’s Greetings”. With Catherine Tate portraying the organiser of a doomed party and a cast that also includes Mark Gatiss and Katherine Parkinson, it is likely to be a show that attracts a great deal of attention when it runs at the National’s Lyttelton Theatre from December 2010 to March 2011. So just as Tate’s Belinda attempts to put on a memorable party, “Season’s Greetings” is likely to be an unforgettable show for London theatre audiences during its run.

Tate has a wealth of credits to her name, stretching from her well known roles in “The Catherine Tate Show” and “Doctor Who” to the numerous appearances she has made on the British stage. “Season’s Greetings” won’t be the first time she has appeared at the National, with previous stints such as “The Way of the World” and “The Prince’s Play”, whilst the Royal Shakespeare Company has also commanded her talents. She can also be seen in the new movie “Gulliver’s Travels” starring Jack Black.

Mark Gatiss, meanwhile, is best known for his part in the popular comedy troupe “The League of Gentlemen” and whilst he is appearing at the National his colleagues Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson continue to work on “Ghost Stories” at the Duke of York’s Theatre. Gatiss has made a career on the screen and also as a screenwriter, penning episodes of “Doctor Who” over the years and also working alongside “Who” head writer Steven Moffat on “Sherlock”.

In “Season’s Greetings” we meet Belinda and Neville (Tate and Neil Stuke) as they prepare to welcome their friends and family to their annual Christmas party. They are hoping for an evening to remember and have worked to make it a great evening for everyone, but this is soon torn apart by their dysfunctional family and this Christmas-to-remember starts to unravel. Soon enough Bernard (Gatiss) is preparing his puppet show and the colourful personalities threaten to make it a very miserable evening indeed.

“Season’s Greetings”, under the direction of Marianna Elliot, will run at the Lyttelton National Theatre from Wednesday 8th December 2010 (with previews from Wednesday 1st December 2010) and continues to Sunday 13th March 2011.
