Synopsis

Amongst the best known West End shows operating in the capital are various jukebox musicals that tell a compelling story and feature an array of familiar songs by acclaimed artists. Perhaps the best known are the Queen and ABBA-based shows “We Will Rock You” and “Mamma Mia!” respectively, in addition to “Thriller Live” and “Jersey Boys”, but another is about to embark upon the capital in 2011 as it introduces us to the work of some of the most famous artists of the 1950s and 1960s. It takes the form of “Million Dollar Quartet” and it arrives at the Noel Coward theatre following a successful stint on the other side of the Atlantic.

Million Dollar Quartet is the name given to the recording sessions and impromptu jam sessions carried out by the supergroup team of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins in the 1950s. In the show it begins as a simple studio venture between Perkins and Lewis, but with Cash and Presley in the building as well it soon becomes an event that will go down in music history. So although the recordings are not as well known as other releases from other impressive supergroups, it has still been immortalised onstage and if its success in Chicago and on Broadway are anything to go by, it should memorable experience.

After all, as it is a jukebox musical, those with theatre tickets are not just getting the recreation of an iconic event onstage, they will also hear a range of songs made famous from all of the artists. So audiences hear songs such as “Who Do You Love?”, “Blue Suede Shoes”, “My Babe”, “I Walk the Line”, “Folsom Prison Blues”, “Fever”, “Great Balls of Fire” and “Real Wild Child”, amongst others. It will make for a great West End treat for anyone on a London theatre break from February 2011.

The show has been penned by the team of Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux, with Eric Schaeffer added to the mix as director. Their efforts State-side have earned them an abundance of Tony Award-nominations (winning one as well) and the result is a West End transfer that cannot come soon enough.

Million Dollar Quartet makes its anticipated appearance at the Noel Coward Theatre, where it is currently due to run from Monday 28th February 2011 (previews from Tuesday 8th February 2011) until Saturday 1st October 2011.
