Martin Freeman, Sophie Thompson and Lucian Msamati lead the cast in the London theatre production of “Clybourne Park”, a show that found an array of admirers when it opened on the other side of the Atlantic early in 2010. Featuring Dominic Cooke as the director of the show, it makes the transition to Theatreland following a stand-out run at the Royal Court Theatre and is likely to follow in the footsteps of other Royal Court transfers like “Enron” as a West End hit.
The title of the show refers to the street in which the action is set, with audiences visiting Clybourne Park during two different eras. First of all we arrive in the 1950s and re-visit it in the modern day where the two periods compare and contrast with one another and leave plenty of room for thought. In 1959 a house is put up for sale by a particular family and when a black family purchases the property to replace them, it causes a great deal of discontent in the neighbourhood. Then we fast-forward to 2009 and when another family is moving into the same property it become clear that some things never really change.
Martin Freeman remains best known to audiences in the UK for his role in the monumentally popular comedy “The Office”, in which he played Tim. However, the actor has appeared in a wealth of further television shows and films over the years, from “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” and “Love Actually” to “Shaun of the Dead” and the recent BBC series “Sherlock”.
Meanwhile, his co-star in the production is Sophie Thompson, who will be familiar to those who have been on London theatre breaks for shows such as “Into the Woods” at the Donmar Warehouse, in addition to a host of productions at the Old Vic and beyond. For the screen she has appeared in television shows such as “EastEnders” and “Doc Martin” and movies such as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral”.
“Clybourne Park” is likely to be a welcome addition to the West End in 2011, during a time in which it will be welcoming a host of new shows from plays like “The Rivals” to musicals like “Ghost”. It replaced “Avenue Q” at the Wyndham’s Theatre and runs from Friday 28th January 2011 to Saturday 7th May 2011.
