This Christmas sees the return of many well known institutions to the West End, from the annual staging of “The Snowman” at the Peacock Theatre to Julia Donaldson’s “The Gruffalo” at the Garrick Theatre. However, another duo will also be making a welcome return after wowing audiences at the Trafalgar Studios last Christmas with “Potted Potter: The Unauthorised Harry Experience”. They are CBBC’s Dan and Jeff, who arrive in the capital with their new show “Potted Panto”, which will provide pantomime fans with a chaotic and memorable display to rival what they did for Harry Potter fans in 2009. Both of their shows previously appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where they have become popular draws for children visiting the Scottish capital in the summer, so expect “Potted Panto” to be another example of their talents.
The show will also see the return of Richard Hurst, the director who previously worked on both “Potted Potter: The Unauthorised Harry Experience” and a previous show entitled “Potted Pirates”. Hurst is well known as a writer and director of shows in Edinburgh, London and on our television screens, where his credits include “Moon the Loon” and “Silly Billy Bum Breath” in Edinburgh, plus “Secret Diary of a Call Girl” and “Miranda” for television.
In “Potted Panto” the team have given themselves a stand-out challenge this year, with only a limited amount of time to explore as many celebrated and popular pantomimes as possible. It doesn’t matter that they have so many shows to get through, it doesn’t even matter that two people will somehow have to portray seven dwarves, because what will be appear onstage is likely to be entertaining from beginning to end. After all, West End shows do not come much better than ones that feature everyone from Snow White and Aladdin to Dick Wittington and Cinderella.
And it is likely that theatre tickets will be hugely popular when they go on sale, after all they are passes to a production featuring a duo regularly seen on CBBC and in previous stand-out productions. And with so many characters from the world of pantomime making an appearance, it is likely to be a must-see event alongside other pantomimes like “Puss in Boots” this Christmas.
So make sure you witness “Potted Panto” when it arrives at the West End’s Vaudeville Theatre with a run that takes it from Friday 10th December 2010 to Sunday 9th January 2011.
