The Piccadilly Theatre will transform into the streets of New York from 2011 as the popular movie “Ghost” becomes a high profile new musical theatre production. Under the direction of Matthew Warchus and featuring Sharon D Clarke in the role previously occupied by Whoopi Goldberg, it is likely to introduce a classic story to a new audience, standing up alongside other West End shows as a must-see event. For fans of the Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore-starring original it will be a wonderful chance to revisit some iconic characters and to welcome some new faces to the roles.
Matthew Warchus is a well known theatre director who has been behind a host of shows across the country. It means that people in cities nationwide are familiar with his work, whilst his London theatre credits include “True West” at the Donmar Warehouse and “Speed-the-Plow” at the Old Vic Theatre, in addition to shows for the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre. So he brings a wealth of experience to his latest role as director of “Ghost the Musical”, taking it to the stage of the Manchester Opera House ahead of its Piccadilly appearance.
And someone else bringing a wealth of experience to “Ghost the Musical” is Sharon D Clarke, who will be drawing from such a background to follow in some iconic footsteps. Whoopi Goldberg received an Academy Award for her portrayal of phoney psychic Oda Mae Brown in “Ghost” and as a result she has a lot to live up to. But with credits such as “We Will Rock You” at the Dominion theatre, not to mention television credits like “Holby City”, the role is in safe hands. Interestingly, Clarke is the second person in recent years to follow in Goldberg’s footsteps, with Patina Miller taking on the high profile role of Deloris Van Cartier in the West End production of “Sister Act the Musical” until 2010.
But with “Ghost the Musical”, audiences will get a heartbreaking story as young couple Sam and Molly are torn apart by Sam’s brutal murder in the streets of New York. It leaves him stuck between our world and the afterlife as he attempts to save Molly from the same fate as his own, fearing that the murderer is not yet finished. But to communicate with her, he must use a medium in the form of Oda Mae Brown and eventually he might complete the unfinished business required for him to move on to the other side.
Ghost the Musical begins its run at the Piccadilly Theatre on Tuesday 19th July 2011 (with previews from Wednesday 22nd June 2011).
