One of the most romantic stories of all time is making its way to the West End in the winter of 2010, ready to break hearts and present a compelling portrayal of star-crossed romance and tragic results. It can only be “Love Story – the Musical”, based on the famous novel by Erich Segal, which has already enjoyed a successful run at the Chichester Festival Theatre and is set to take the Duchess Theatre by storm. Not only is amongst the most romantic stories ever told, its movie version was a well known ‘chick flick’ and this version is set to boast producing power in the form of Michael Ball. So it is likely to turn a few heads when it joins other London theatre shows for a high profile run.
Michael Ball is no stranger to the West End stage, having performed in a host of well known shows over the years, including “Les Miserables” when it first appeared at the Barbican Theatre and “Hairspray” at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2009. However, when it comes to “Love Story – the Musical” it will mark his Theatreland debut as a producer, so it is certainly something that many people will have a close eye on.
The plot of “Love Story” deals with a familiar theme of lovers coming together from different backgrounds. But unlike “Romeo and Juliet” in which they were from rival families the Montagues and the Capulets, it is their financial status that forms the barrier with Oliver coming from a wealthy background and Jenny a poor one. When his father discovers this, Oliver’s financial support is severed and if this is not bad enough, they discover something truly distressing when they are married, something that could bring their romance to a tragic and heartbreaking ending. When the novel was penned and released in the 1970s it would instantly find an audience and it soon saw this fan base spread with the movie version of the same name.
The movie also happened to be written by Erich Segal and when it hit cinema screens he was not yet finished with the characters involved, returning to the world he created with 1977’s sequel, the novel “Oliver’s Story”. He would go on to pen various other books and movies right up to his death in January 2010.
“Love Story - the Musical” is set to take to the stage of the Duchess Theatre on Monday 6th December 2010 (with previews from Saturday 27th November 2010), where it is set to run until at least Saturday 26th February 2011.
