Synopsis

The Vaudeville Theatre is well used to presenting high profile plays and musicals at its location in the West End. Over recent years it has seen a well known revival of the classic 1990s hit “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice” with Diana Vickers in the lead role, whilst 2010 has also seen it welcome Jeff Goldblum and Mercedes Ruehl as it staged Neil Simon’s “The Prisoner of Second Avenue”. So the theatre is maintaining a positive standing in the London theatre scene and it is likely to remain a vital part of a thriving industry.

From November 2010 it proves this further with a new staging of the 1890s Oscar Wilde classic “An Ideal Husband”, which pits a Government Minister in London against the blackmailing antics a vindictive woman. Not only is it a well known show that has appeared regularly in the years since it was first penned, it is also going to be attracting a great deal of attention for the cast it has managed to assemble. Alexander Hanson takes up the lead role of the Minister embroiled in scandal, with Rachael Stirling portraying his wife Mrs Chilton and Hanson’s own wife Samantha Bond playing the blackmailer. Also joining the team is the actor Elliot Cowan as Lord Goring.

The plot focuses on Sir Robert Chilton, who has everything he needs – a high profile job in Westminster as a Government Minister and a loving wife – but with all of these things in place it is clear that he has a lot to lose. So when a woman appears on the scene who knows of a misdeed in his past and has the evidence to prove it, Chilton must work hard to attempt to clean up the mess and to do so he looks upon the help of his good friend Lord Goring. The plot takes place over the course of 24 hours and has been told in various forms since it was first penned, including three movies and radio and television productions.

Rachael Stirling has appeared in a host of shows over her career, with credits that have seen her work for the National Theatre, the Donmar Warehouse and beyond. Her work includes the likes of “The Priory” at the Royal Court Theatre in 2009 and “Tamburlaine” at the Barbican Theatre in 2005.

“An Ideal Husband” makes its way to the Vaudeville Theatre on Wednesday 10th November 2010 (with previews from Thursday 4th November 2010) and runs until Saturday 19th February 2011.
