Synopsis

A tale of comic mishap, mistaken identity and a shocking lack of trust makes its way to the Old Vic Theatre later in 2010 with Sir Richard Eyre directing the latest revival of Georges Feydeau’s “A Flea in Her Ear”. Taken from the pages of John Mortimer’s renowned translation from 1966, it will pit Tom Hollander and Lisa Dillon against one another as a husband and wife fearing infidelity on the other side. The plot is well known for the way in which the confusion set about at the onset snowballs into something absurd and head-scratchingly humorous.

Both Tom Hollander and Lisa Dillon will be easily recognisable to audiences as they have both embarked on successful careers on the stage and the screen. Hollander has appeared in both “The Thick of It” and the movie “In the Loop” in addition to stage shows such as “Tartuffe” at the Almeida Theatre, whilst Dillon is well known for her appearances in “Cambridge Spies” and shows like “Othello” for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

So when they come together to portray Raymonde and Victor in “A Flea in Her Ear”, they will bring years of experience to the complex roles. Raymonde is the jealous wife who set the plot in motion when she suspects Victor of being unfaithful. He has shown signs of infidelity in his character and alongside her friend Lucienne she concocts a plan to entrap him, by inviting him to a fictional rendezvous with an admirer at a Paris hotel. But because Victor has been entirely faithful to Raymonde he has no interest in attending the meeting, instead sending a male admirer of Lucienne’s. As more people arrive at the scene, including Victor for separate reasons, matters snowball until everyone has pointed the finger at each other. It seems clear by the end of the show that it would have so much easier if Raymonde had simply asked!

Director Richard Eyre has also embarked on a long career that will make his staging of the comic show highly anticipated. His credits include a stint as the director of the National Theatre, in addition to work directing movie such as “Iris”.

So expect A Flea in Her Ear to be a high profile production when it runs at the Old Vic Theatre from Tuesday 14th December 2010 (with previews from Saturday 4th December 2010) to Saturday 5th March 2011.
