2011 is the year in which London theatre audiences get to welcome everyone’s favourite green ogre to the stage of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane as Shrek the Musical makes its anticipated appearance in the West End. Featuring a host of talented actors under the direction of Jason Moore it will be an opportunity for audiences to revisit the world of Shrek in a whole new way as classic fairy tales come to life onstage and some of the silver screen’s most famous characters from recent years embark on an adventure. It follows in the footsteps of various other movies-come-musicals, most notably another animated adventure in the form of Disney’s The Lion King, which also appears in the West End at the Lyceum Theatre.
In Shrek the Musical we follow the events of the first Shrek movie closely as we are introduced to the swamp-dwelling ogre in his forest home. In Shrek’s world various well known fairy tales and classic stories are recreated meaning that a host of familiar characters make an appearance, whilst some iconic scenes are given a fitting homage. As Shrek accompanies himself with his new companion Donkey he embarks to rescue a princess from a tower, only to land himself in hot water as it transpires that it was a plan to see her rescued by a handsome prince.
Directing the production is Jason Moore, who helmed the production when it appeared on the other side of the Atlantic. The American theatre director has been behind various well known Broadway musicals, including their versions of Les Misérables and Avenue Q, the latter of which he also staged in the West End. Meanwhile, he has also directed for television where his credits include the likes of Dawson’s Creek.
And when Shrek the Musical arrives in London, those with theatre tickets will see actors such as Nigel Lindsay (Shrek), Amanda Holden (Princess Fiona), Richard Blackwood (Donkey) and Nigel Harman (Lord Farquaad) live onstage. They are all experienced performers, with Lindsay’s credits including the likes of Sucker Punch at the Royal Court Theatre and Richard Blackwood best known for television shows like The Richard Blackwood Show and his regular radio programme. Meanwhile, Amanda Holden has appeared in everything from Kiss Me Kate to Britain’s Got Talent.
Shrek the Musical makes its anticipated appearance at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane from Tuesday 7th June 2011 (whilst previews appear from May 2011).
