Synopsis

In March 2000 the music world lost an influential and talented star in Ian Dury, who had maintained a long career with The Blockheads from the 1970s and whose effect on the music world would be long lasting. Since then he has barely been out of the spotlight, with various tributes to the troubled star cropping up across the entertainment landscape. One of them was the 2010 movie “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll”, which featured “Lord of the Rings” star Andy Serkis as Ian Dury, whilst another took the form of “Hit Me! The Life and Rhymes of Ian Dury”, which enjoyed great success when it was staged at the Leicester Square Theatre in 2009. Dury’s lasting appeal can be seen in the show’s popularity – and in Serkis’s BAFTA nomination for his portrayal of the singer onscreen – and as a result the stage is set for audiences to witness the production once again in 2010.

So “Hit Me! The Life and Rhymes of Ian Dury” makes its way to the West End in September 2010, this time for a brief, three night run at the Garrick Theatre. The show will once again allow audiences to hear glorious renditions of some classic songs, whilst Josh Darcy returns to the role of Fred ‘Spider’ Rower, Dury’s well known roadie.

Mark White is the actor and performer employed to take on the title role, portraying Dury for the troubled star that he was. On the outside, his positive persona would mean audiences could be forgiven for thinking he was enjoying life, but underneath it all he battled personal demons. He was, of course, most famous as the frontman of the influential band Ian Dury and the Blockheads, who turned the New Wave scene of the 1970s on its head with some chart-topping songs. It is a band that continues to this day, albeit without Dury, and maintains its place as a popular group.

Songs such as “Hit Me with your Rhythm Stick” and “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll” would become huge hits when they were first released and they are amongst the famous tracks appearing in the stage show. It will undoubtedly make for a compelling showcase for fans of The Blockheads and newcomers alike.

Hit Me! The Life and Rhymes of Ian Dury is at the Garrick Theatre with a three-night run on Thursday 9th September 2010, Friday 10th September 2010 and Saturday 11th September 2010.
