J B Priestley is most famous for his acclaimed time plays, which included “Time and the Conways” - last seen at the National Theatre in London in 2009, in addition to his plays featuring mysterious characters like “An Inspector Calls”, which was seen earlier in the year. Now, coming soon to the Garrick Theatre is a new production of one of his famous comedies, 1938’s classic play “When We Are Married”; a farcical tale of three couples facing some unwanted truths in turn of the century West Yorkshire.
“When We Are Married” has been staged regularly since its London premiere in the 1930s, becoming a popular production across the country and on the other side of the Atlantic in New York. It means that it is likely to find a considerable audience when it arrives at the Garrick Theatre in October 2010, with a talented cast that includes Rosemary Ashe and Maureen Lipman, plus many others, all working under the direction of Christopher Luscombe.
The story takes transports us to a local community in the heart of West Yorkshire in 1908 and it is here in which we meet the three couples whose lives are about to be turned upside down. They take the forms of the Parkers, the Helliwells and the Soppitts, who were all married at the same time, within the confines of the same church and by the very same vicar 25 years ago. So as they prepare to celebrate a quarter of a century together they learn a shocking truth that will upset their standing within the community and also force them to re-evaluate their lives – the vicar who married them was not licensed. Cue some hilarious situations as the three couples attempt to keep this secret from spilling out into the public.
The performers set to appear in the production have all enjoyed successful careers with an array of credits to their names. Whilst Maureen Lipman was previously seen in her acclaimed performance in “A Little Night Music” at the Garrick last year, Rosemary Ashe has also embarked on a renowned stage career, becoming a part of the original London cast for shows such as “The Phantom of the Opera”. Meanwhile, Roy Hudd recently appeared in “The Wizard of Oz” at the Royal Festival Theatre, David Horovitch was seen in shows like “Bedroom Farce” and “Life is a Dream” at the Donmar Warehouse and Susie Blake has been seen in the likes of “Coronation Street”
When We Are Married appears at the Garrick Theatre, beginning on Wednesday 27th October 2010 (with previews from Tuesday 19th October 2010) and running to Saturday 26th February 2011.
