In the 1980s there was one man who came to define the role of Sherlock Holmes and that was Jeremy Brett, who portrayed the part in the television series “The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes”. But it was not the only show in which he acted as the famous sleuth; he also appeared in stage productions and one of them saw him team-up with his television co-star Edward Hardwicke – “The Secret of Sherlock Holmes” at the Wyndham’s Theatre.
The play was the latest in a long line of shows that had appeared over the years, just over a hundred years since the original Sherlock Holmes story “A Study in Scarlett” was penned in 1887. It was also an occasion in which the world’s most famous detective would reveal a shocking secret both to the audience and to Dr Watson. Then, around twenty years later the show would return to the stage, this time on a UK tour, with Peter Egan and Philip Franks replacing the original duo and Robin Herford taking on directing duties. This version now makes its way to the Duchess Theatre in the West End, with Robert Daws replacing Franks and Peter Egan remaining in the title role.
The story of “The Secret of Sherlock Holmes” by Jeremy Paul focuses on the original meeting between the duo as Dr Watson offers his services to the detective. We witness them discuss the merits of living and working together, but pretty soon we are about to learn a shocking secret concerning the Baker Street resident’s true relationship with his nemesis Moriarty. For Watson, having just returned from the war abroad, it is an alarming revelation.
Peter Egan is best known to audiences for his role in the 1980s sitcom “Ever Decreasing Circles”, though he has also appeared in a host of further screen roles over the years in addition to stage productions that have toured the country. Recently, he was seen in the Frank Oz movie “Death at a Funeral”, which is the latest in a long line of movie roles that also includes “Chariots of Fire”. Meanwhile, Daws will be familiar to those who have seen shows such as “The Royal” and “Casualty”, with further credits that include “Public Property” in the West End.
“The Secret of Sherlock Holmes” appears at the Duchess Theatre with a start date of Tuesday 20th July 2010 (previews from Thursday 15th July 2010) and an initial end date of Saturday 11th September 2010.
