Synopsis

Back in the 1980s residents in San Diego flocked to the theatre to witness the latest musical from Stephen Sondheim. Taking its cues from the fairy tales of the Brothers Bloom and from a novel published a decade earlier, it would become an enormous success and with inevitability, audiences in New York and London would eventually get a look in. In the case of the latter, the Phoenix Theatre opened its doors to the production in 1990 and it would pave the way for future performances as “Into the Woods” became a popular West End show.

Now it is set to return to the London theatre scene, but instead of the Phoenix Theatre, it will now be staged at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park, which provides the best location to witness live shows during the summer months. 2010 also sees the venue host shows such as Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” and William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” and with “Into the Woods” added to the mix it should lead to another successful season.

This is helped by the unbeatable cast that has been hired to bring the show back into the hearts of London audiences, with the familiar faces of Hannah Waddingham and Helen Dallimore making an appearance. However, there will also be some familiar vocals as Dame Judi Dench has pre-recorded her voice for the part of the Giant, providing the icing on the cake for a production that already has a lot going for it.

Into the Woods mixes together a host of Brothers Bloom fairy tales and results in a unique story of a baker and his family. As well as the Giant (from “Jack and the Beanstalk”) the show also features well known characters like Cinderella and Rapunzal and with some stand out songs to boot, it should lead to a memorable showcase.

And with Hannah Waddingham in the role of the Witch, it is certain to be interesting. The London theatre actress has already proven herself to be a talented performer, with two Laurence Olivier nominations to her name and a host of West End credits that place her in high demand. She has also appeared in various television shows and movies over a successful career.

Into the Woods will begin its run at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park on Wednesday 11th August 2010 (previews from Thursday 5th August 2010) and will continue until Saturday 11th September 2010.
