The plays of William Shakespeare are regularly seen in the capital and as they were penned hundreds of years ago they can boast to being amongst the oldest shows around. However, even by Shakespeare’s standards, “The Comedy of Errors” is an old tale, penned in the earlier days of the Bard’s career and setting the scene for a farcical tale of mistaken identity.
Shakespeare would later use this theme to great effect in future works and it served “The Comedy of Errors” well, laying the foundations for future writers to come forward and use the plot in their own ways. But then, the story being told in this play from the 1590s had its own inspirations; in particular the comical tales from Roman storytellers.
And now it all comes to Regent’s Park, where the Open Air Theatre once again opens its doors to audiences this summer with a string of classic shows and a host of talented actors. Whilst Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” will both be making an appearance this summer, “The Comedy of Errors” makes its way in June 2010 and is likely to entertain in the way that only Shakespeare’s work can.
But then, this is no normal staging of the work of William Shakespeare as the Philip Franks-directed show transports the classic setting to the 1940s, where the tale of unknown twins coming together will take place on the streets of Casablanca. In the original, we followed two sets of masters and servants who find out the hard way that they have long-lost twin brothers. When they unknowingly find themselves in the same town they accidentally mix with each other’s friends through a case of mistaken identity, whilst further farcical encounters lie in wait.
Philip Franks has worked on a wide range of shows across the country, from the West End to the Edinburgh Fringe, where his credits have included “Twelfth Night”, “The Heiress”, “The Cocktail Party” and “The White Devil”. But his work has not been confined to the stage, with directing credits also appearing in radio and in film.
The Comedy of Error makes its way to the Open Air Theatre in London’s Regent’s Park from Tuesday 29th June 2010 (previews from Thursday 24th June 2010) to Saturday 31st July 2010.
