The West End proves once again that it is the best place to witness some high profile actors in leading stage productions as Martin Sherman’s “Onassis”, starring Robert Lindsay, appears at the Novello Theatre. Alongside Lydia Leonard, Anna Francolini, Liz Crowther and many more, he will present a unique look at the life and relationships of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis as Sherman’s 2008 show “Aristo” is given a huge facelift.
It is the latest production to appear in the West End from Chichester, a location that regularly provides the London theatre scene with some stand out shows. But this production, having been modified, will also be making an appearance in Derby ahead of its Novello opening.
So those that saw the 2008 show at the Chichester Minerva Theatre will find something new in “Onassis” as the focus becomes centred on his high profile lovers, wives and the relationship with his son.
Robert Lindsay needs little introduction, having built a respected career from renowned stage productions and a host of challenging screen roles, from Tony Blair in “The Trial of Tony Blair” to the title role in 1950s Detective series “Jericho”. He has also appeared on television screens in the likes of “My Family” and “Hornblower”, whilst his stage efforts led to a Laurence Olivier Award in 1984 for “Me and My Girl” in the West End and further praise for “The Entertainer” at the Old Vic in 2007 and “Oliver!” at the London Palladium.
Whilst starring in the series “Jericho” he also appeared alongside Lydia Leonard and the pair will be reunited in “Onassis” as Leonard takes on the role of former First Lady Jackie Kennedy, whose marriage to Onassis in 1968 made headlines around the world. The actress is likely to bring a compelling portrayal of the character to the stage having spent many years honing her skills on the stage and screen, with credits like “Time and the Conways” at the National Theatre and work for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
But Jacqueline Kennedy was not the only woman in the life of Aristotle Onassis and years earlier he also had a high profile relationship with well known opera star Maria Callas, who is portrayed here by Anna Francolini. Under the direction of Nancy Meckler she will star in the production alongside performances from the likes of Liz Crowther, Tom Austen, Gawn Grainger, John Hodgkinson, Robert Hastie, Sue Kelvin, Ben Grove and Graeme Taylor.
“Onassis” is at the Novello Theatre in London’s West End from Tuesday 12th October 2010 (previews from Thursday 30th September 2010) and continues to Saturday 8th January 2011.
