Willy Russell’s “Educating Rita” is one of those plays that have become synonymous with British theatre, dealing with issues that have always been at the heart of society and resulting in a production that is still as relevant as ever. So it is safe to call it a genuine classic and when it appears at Trafalgar Studios 1 this summer it is likely to attract large crowds once again as it runs in repertoire with another of Russell’s classics – “Shirley Valentine”.
The production started out life at the well known London Bridge venue, the Menier Chocolate Factory, and now makes the transition to the West End. As a result it is now part of a long line of well known shows to make this journey, with previous Menier hits including the recent production of “La Cage Aux Folles”, as well as “Sweet Charity” and more. So with a trusted team working behind the scenes and the source material coming from Willy Russell, audiences will have faith in a show that is likely to be as popular as ever.
“Educating Rita” premiered in 1980 under the support of the Royal Shakespeare Company and in the 30 years since it has been staged all over the world and even spawned a movie adaptation starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters. It stands up alongside the likes of Russell’s “Blood Brothers” and “Shirley Valentine”, both of which also managed to tap into a part of British society to unbeatable effects.
The story is set entirely within the office of Open University lecturer Dr Frank Bryant, who is about to welcome a new student at the start of the show in the form of working-class girl Rita, whose real name is later revealed to be Susan. Whilst the middle class educator, who has been seen to enjoy his drink, is preparing to pass down his knowledge to a new generation, he soon realises that he can learn a lot from his new student as her alternate background gives him some profound insights. Over the course of a year, the pair form a bond of admiration that transcends their class boundaries and gives plenty of food for thought.
Frank is portrayed by the Laurence Olivier-nominated actor Tim Piggot-Smith and the theatre regular Laura Dos Santos. Both have an extensive list of credits to their names and will bring these iconic characters to life.
“Educating Rita” (appearing in repertoire with “Shirley Valentine”) runs at Trafalgar Studios 1 from Monday 26th July 2010 (previews from Thursday 8th July 2010) and continues to Saturday 30th October 2010.
