Ask anyone to name a popular West End musical and many of them will mention “Les Misérables”, which continues its run at the Queen’s Theatre with no signs of slowing down. This is because the Cameron Mackintosh-produced musical has been running in the capital since 1985, making it amongst the longest running shows in the world and certainly the longest musical in London. So now that it has been performing for a quarter of a century, a unique celebration, featuring former stars and special guests, will be appearing at the O2 in October under the banner “Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert”.
Amongst those taking on lead roles are the tenor Alfie Boe, “Little Britain” star Matt Lucas, pop icon Nick Jonas, Lea Salonga and Norm Lewis. It makes for an impressive line up in the biggest year for “Les Misérables” yet.
Alfie Boe has appeared in a whole host of prestigious performances over the years, working for the English National Opera and the Royal Opera House, with many of his appearances televised on the likes of ITV. Meanwhile, his co-star Matt Lucas is best known for his work in “Little Britain”, “Shooting Stars” and “Catterick”, whilst Nick Jonas has made a name for himself as one third of pop group the Jonas Brothers. Norm Lewis is a regular of the Broadway stage whose credits include “Les Misérables” and “The Little Mermaid” and, finally, Lea Salonga is a Fillipina singer who has also appeared in the Broadway version of “Les Misérables”.
“Les Misérables” is the story of an ex-con who is being pursued for decades by a determined Police Inspector as the threat of revolution looms over 19th century Paris. Jean Valjean is recently released from prison and instead of integrating with the local community, is shunned and forced to take refuge with a priest. It is the theft of silver which breaks his parole and sets the plot in motion as Police Inspector Javert grows suspicious of his and the priest’s alibi, sparking a cat and mouse chase that lasts two decades. So with Valjean staying away from Javert and seeking a new life from himself, the committed Inspector is only one step behind.
The 25th Anniversary Show will be the third production to appear in London throughout 2010, with the main Queen’s Theatre version continuing its run in the West End alongside a brief run at the Barbican Theatre from mid September to early October. The “Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Show”, on the other hand, makes its appearance at the O2 on Sunday 3rd October 2010.
