What do you get when you take a novel by the team that brought us “The Gruffalo” and bring it to the stage with the team that produced “We’re All Going on a Beat Hunt” in 2008? The answer is “Room on the Broom”, 2010’s premiere kid’s show that will be appearing at the Garrick Theatre this August. With both “The Gruffalo” and “We’re All Going on a Bear Hunt” attracting children from across the country to venues in the West End, “Room on the Broom” looks set to repeat their success as it follows a frustrated witch and her hapless cat.
On any normal night, the witch will take to the sky with her cat and enjoy plenty of room on her broom. But this is no normal night and when a bunch of her belongings – her hat, her wand and her bow – are blown away into the night by a quick gust of wind, she must employ the help of some colourful characters to help her. So fighting for space are a dog, a frog and a bird, who must all be quick to retrieve her belongings before a ferocious dragon, who is hot on their tale, catches up with them.
The story was first set to paper back in 2002 when Julia Donaldson re-teamed with her collaborator from “The Gruffalo” Axel Scheffler to tell her latest tale. The pair have both worked together on a host of children’s books, with Donaldson’s back catalogue amassing more than twenty stories. Her first was 1993’s “A Squash and a Squeeze”, whilst her latest offerings have included “Tyrannosaurus Drip” in 2007, “Stick Man” in 2008 and “Taby McTat” in 2009.
Scheffler has also enjoyed a long career in his own right, having begun in advertising back in the 1980s and gone on to provide illustrations to a host of authors’ work all over Europe, from the UK and beyond. His distinctive style has earned him many admirers.
So with the summer months already upon us and the kids out of school in August, shows like “Room on the Broom” are here to provide a summer holiday to remember. It appears at the West End’s Garrick Theatre for daytime shows from Wednesday 28th July 2010 until Sunday 29th August 2010.
