The Old Vic Theatre, under the Artistic Direction of Kevin Spacey, is staging a compelling drama in the West End in 2010 with Neil Simon’s “The Prisoner of Second Avenue”. The show will see two Hollywood performers take to the stage to perform under the direction of Terry Johnson in what is likely to be the theatre event of the year.
These two performers are Jeff Goldblum and Mercedes Ruehl, who will both be joining forces having both appeared alongside Spacey in previous shows in the capital. Goldblum appeared in “Speed-the-Plow” at the Old Vic Theatre next to the “American Beauty” star in 2008, whilst Ruehl appeared in “Lost in Yonkers” (another Neil Simon play) with him in the West End.
With “The Prisoner of Second Avenue” they inhabit a 1970s New York City couple in the form of Mel and Edna Edison, whose life is about to take a turn for the worse as they struggle to keep up with the ins and outs of city life. Mel has managed to work in a steady job for many years, but is made redundant during the course of the play, knocking him back during a time in his life when he thought he was set in his ways. But in Manhattan, this is not their only problem with a host of urban dilemmas thrown their way and it culminates in Mel suffering a nervous breakdown. As a result, Edna is left to pick up the pieces as he descends into self-hatred and depression.
Mercedes Ruehl will bring a lot to her role as Edna Edison, having earned an Academy Award for her role in the movie “The Fisher King”. Add to that her nomination for a Tony Award for her performance in “The Shadow Box” on Broadway and it becomes clear why she is such an important draw for the show.
Likewise, Jeff Goldblum is sure to attract many theatregoers to the Vaudeville Theatre. An Academy Award-nominated actor, his most famous roles appeared in the 1980s and 1990s in the forms of David Cronenberg’s “The Fly”, Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” and “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” and Roland Emmerich’s “Independence Day”. In recent years he has appeared in “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” in 2004 and the television series “Law and Order: Criminal Intent”. The performer has also appeared in numerous Broadway productions and remains a popular actor after decades in the business.
“The Prisoner of Second Avenue” makes its appearance at the Vaudeville Theatre beginning on Tuesday 13th July 2010 (previews from Wednesday 30th June 2010) and continuing to Saturday 11th September 2010.
