Romance, adventure and surprises are all in store for the Frake family as they head out to the annual Iowa State Fair. In Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical there is no end to the fun at hand and as it appears on the stage of Trafalgar Studios 2, theatre fans are certain to flock in huge numbers. For over half a century this timeless story has been putting a smile on the faces of audience members all over the world and this will be no different with the 2010 West End staging. So just like the Frake family leave their routines behind for three days of adventure, London theatregoers will escape for an evening of fun at Trafalgar Studios 2.
The Frake family includes the patriarch Abel Frake and his prize boar, matriarch Melissa Frake, their son Wayne and daughter Margy. Together they decide to embark on a wonderful three days of pleasure, away from their Iowa farm in the heartland of America. At the 1946 annual Iowa State Fair they discover great prizes, unexpected romances and some wonderful surprises. It means that when they return to their lives they will be heading in new directions as the State Fair leaves a lasting impression.
But the show would be nothing without its Academy Award-winning songs, which include classic numbers such as “It Might as Well Be Spring” “Our State Fair”, “Driving at Night”, and “It’s a Grand Night for Singing”, plus further additions such as “More than Just a Friend”.
The story of “State Fair” begins with the American author Phil Stong, who completed his novel in 1932. It would eventually become his most famous work as it appeared on the silver screen on numerous occasions, the most notable of which was the Academy Award-winning 1945 musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It was from this movie that the current stage musical would be born, delighting audiences in the decades since and finding pride of place in the Trafalgar Studios 2010 season. It has proven to be a timeless masterpiece that future generations will continue to enjoy.
So expect a feel-good show in the West End this summer as “State Fair” makes its way to Trafalgar Studios 2. It runs from Thursday 5th August 2010 (previews from Tuesday 3rd August 2010) and continues until Saturday 28th August 2010.
