The Trafalgar Studios regularly attracts shows that previously found audiences elsewhere on the theatre circuit and with “Wolfboy” this is no different. Originally staged at the Musical Theatre at George Square during Edinburgh’s 2009 Festival Fringe, it makes its way to the West End following widespread critical success. The show, described as a psycho-sexual thriller, stars a youthful cast of performers who will hope to repeat this positive reaction in a new location as it attracts younger theatregoers to the stage.
Adapted by someone familiar to audiences of the Trafalgar Studios (his other credits include “New Boy”) Russell Labey, the musical has been transformed from the original text by Canadian playwright Brad Fraser.
To emulate the success of the Edinburgh show, “Wolfboy” brings with it two of its original stars Paul Holowaty and Gregg Lowe, whose characters of Bernie and David experience a close relationship as they embark on their adventure within an institution. Meanwhile, new to the show are former “Any Dream Will Do” contestant Daniel Boys and ex-“Hollyoaks” actress Emma Rigby.
Rigby isn’t alone in starring in “Hollyoaks” (though she did win a British Soap Award in 2008 for her role of Hannah Ashworth). Paul Holwaty is also an alumnus of the Channel 4 teen soap, with other credits that include “Coronation Street” and “Casualty”. Gregg Lowe, whilst previously appearing in Russell Labey’s “New Boy”, has made guest appearances on long-running soaps like “Doctors”.
Wolfboy is an interesting take on the institution-based story as it focuses on two teenage boys whose adventure brings them very close together. They both have different reasons for being removed from society at this point in their lives, with the character of Bernie having attempted to take his own life. But the title of the show comes from the character of David, a former street hustler who claims to have acquired the powers of the wolf.
So with many shows hitting the Trafalgar Studios this season, “Wolfboy” is certainly one that stands out amongst the crowd, not just for its younger audience, but for its compelling storyline. It means that when it appears at Studios 2 it may well attract a large crowd. It runs from Thursday 8th July 2010 (previews from Tuesday 6th July 2010) until Saturday 31st July 2010.
