Synopsis

Hot on the heels of previous success stories like “Sweet Charity” and “La Cage Aux Folles”, the Menier Chocolate Factory presents another musical that will take London by storm. “Aspects of Love” is a revival of an Andrew Lloyd Webber classic, based on the novella by David Garnett, which first appeared in the late 1980s to great success. It ran for three years at the Duke of York’s Theatre and now it emerges under the direction of Sir Trevor Nunn with both Michael Arden and Katherine Kingsley making their way to the stage. The result is likely to be another success story for the Menier Chocolate Factory.

Trevor Nunn has directed work all over the world and remains a renowned figure in British theatre following numerous Laurence Olivier Awards and nominations. He has been the Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, staged productions in Broadway and scored many hits in the West End, making him highly sought-after in the modern day. His most recent London productions have included “A Little Night Music”, “Inherit the Wind” and “King Lear”, whilst his screen credits are made up of the film “Lady Jane” (1986) and TV productions of “The Merchant of Venice”, “Othello” and “The Three Sisters”.

With “Aspects of Love” he directs Arden and Kingsley in the roles of Alex and Rose. The former is a student travelling across 1940s France whilst the latter is an irresistible actress, whose charms soon attract Alex’s attention. When the pair indulge in a passionate relationship, their lives are turned upside down and matters are made particularly complex with the unexpected arrival of one of Rose’s relatives. As a result, “Aspects of Love” does exactly what it says on the tin and exposes the ways in which love affects people, with one of the musical’s own songs making it all too clear – “Love Changes Everything”.

Arden and Kingsley join forces having both built up impressive lists of work on either side of the Atlantic. Arden is a Texan actor who has appeared in television shows (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and on Broadway (“Big River”). Meanwhile, Kingsley has been seen in the likes of “Piaf” at the Donmar Warehouse (nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award) and shows like “Hollyoaks”.

Aspects of Love makes its way to the Meneir Chocolate Factory and runs from Thursday 15th July 2010 (previews from Wednesday 7th July 2010) until Sunday 26th September 2010.
