Synopsis

During the Second World War everyone had to do their part and for the women of the country it was a unique and distinct time where signing up to the Women’s Land Army saw them dig for victory. It is this era of history that is of great interest to Sonia Ritter and Lions Part, who present “Lilies on the Land” – an account of the women of the era and the ups and downs that encompassed their lives. They have compiled the production using hundreds of letters from former Land Girls, giving it an impressive authenticity as four characters sign up for the movement and experience great pain, but also good humour in a compelling and moving piece of theatre.

Sonia Ritter directs actresses Rosalind Cressy, Sarah Finch, Dorothy Lawrence and Kali Peacock in the production, four performers with various credits to their name. They will bring out the humanity of the period, helping to celebrate the work of those who lost so much during a time that will be remembered forever.

Cressy takes on the role of Vera in her latest role for Lions Part, with whom she has previously starred in “The Merry Wives of Windsor”, “Twelfth Night” and “Gammer Gurton’s Needle” (which was also directed by Ritter). Her television roles having included “Cherished” and “Footballer’s Wives”, whilst her additional stage appearance have encompassed “About Alice” and “A Sleep of Prisoners” on national tours.

She stars alongside Sarah Finch as Poppy, who appears following further television credits that include “Hollyoaks”, “Ten Days to Victory”, “Letters to Alice” and “Gambling Man”. She has also appeared in various roles for the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company, which has meant she has appeared in “The Winter’s Tale”, “Peter Pan”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and more, with further theatre credits that include “Henry IV” in the West End and the likes of “Little Prince”.

Both Dorothy Lawrence and Kali Peacock also have additional credits, with Lawrence previously appearing in “Dead Husband” and “Gammer  Gurton’s Needle” for Lions Part, for whom she is a founding member. Meanwhile, Kali Peacock has appeared in Lions Part shows like “The Gunpowder Plot” and “The Old Wives Tale”, with screen roles that include the movie “Finding Neverland” and television shows “Judge John Deed” and “Where the Heart Is”.

Lilies on the Land makes its appearance at the Arts Theatre from Tuesday 8th June 2010 until Saturday 17th July 2010.
